Lyme Disease – Tick Bite

Ticks are small insects that carry a variety of illnesses including Lyme disease. Ticks are endemic in many regions and certain ticks can transmit Lyme Disease through their bites. A single dose of an antibiotic can help prevent Lyme Disease. Get treated before a Lyme infection develops.

Lyme prevention treatment.

  • Complete your visit in minutes without video or voice calls
  • Receive same day Lyme prophylaxis medication:
    • Doxycycline

What causes Lyme disease?

  • The bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi is transmitted through the bites of ticks, primarily the deer tick
  • Deer ticks that remain attached to your body for at least 36 hours have the greatest risk

Features of Tick bites and Lyme disease:

  • Not everyone who develops Lyme disease remembers the tick bite because the deer tick is very small and its bite can go unnoticed
  • Some bites have a reaction similar to a mosquito bite, where the area will become itchy and red. Other bites have no reaction at all making them difficult to recognize.
  • Symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, a “bull’s-eye” rash at the site of the bite or elsewhere, joint pain or swelling, body aches, muscle aches, general fatigue, headache, and stiff neck

What else should I know?

  • Our online assessment will help determine if you are a good candidate for treatment
  • Treatment with the antibiotic doxycycline right after a deer tick bite reduces the risk of a Lyme disease infection
  • This treatment must occur soon after the tick bite to be effective
  • You may still develop Lyme disease or other tick-borne infections, sometimes without having any early symptoms
  • It is very important to follow up with your provider to see if blood tests for Lyme or other diseases are needed, sometimes weeks or months after the tick bite
  • Just answer a few questions to get started with your online visit
